CPR Certification Requirements for Athletic Trainers in Indiana


Indiana is a unique and special state, and itā€™s one of the states that has recently seen a surge of support for online-based CPR certification in recent years.

  • Athletic Trainers in Indiana are required to have an Healthcare provider level CPR/BLS (Basic Life Support) certification.
  • The Indiana Athletic Trainers Board adheres to the Board of Certification(BOC) requirement for Athletic Trainers.
  • BOC requires Athletic Trainers to maintain CPR certification for Healthcare Providers with a practical skills component throughout the reporting period.
  • For continuing education; Athletic Trainers can claim CE credits for BLS/CPR Certification with a practical portion.
  • Most employers will require a Healthcare Provider level BLS/CPR.
 

Course Content


Athletic Trainers in Indiana usually need a Basic Life Support (BLS/CPR) certification at the Healthcare Provider level. Required skills include; Adult, child and infant CPR, AED, and use of a bag-valve-mask. Some Athletic Trainers may also need a First Aid course as well, but this is determined by the employer.



Delivery Method

Athletic Trainers in Indiana are required to do the Basic Life Support level of CPR certification for Healthcare Providers that includes a practical skills evaluation through in person or blended training process. 100% online CPR will only be an option upon the discretion of the employer or institution and is not accepted by the state licensing department or for continuing education credits for Athletic Trainers.

Some employers may require a specific type of training, or may leave it up to the State’s requirement. If you are not certain of your employer's requirement, make sure to check with them about both the training type and the required course content.

Board Statement:

ATs must have a current emergency cardiac care (ECC) certiļ¬cation in their BOC proļ¬le. Annually, ATs will be asked to upload their current ECC certiļ¬cation (card or certiļ¬cate) or be prompted to conļ¬rm their current ECC certiļ¬cation.

ATs must be able to:
Demonstrate ongoing certiļ¬cation in the competencies outlined in the BOC’s ECC guidelines.
Maintain documentation for current and expired courses for up to two years after the reporting period.

ECC certiļ¬cation programs must include all of the following:

  • Adult CPR
  • Pediatric CPR
  • Second rescuer CPR
  • AED
  • Airway obstruction
  • Barrier devices (e.g., pocket mask, bag valve mask)
  • Demonstrated skills (Online ECC courses are acceptable if skills are demonstrated and tested in person by a qualiļ¬ed instructor. The in-person test can include video technology.)

Acceptable ECC providers are those adhering to the most current “International Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiac Care.”

Sec. 1. (a) An applicant for licensure as an athletic trainer shall do the following:
(b) Applicants for licensure as an athletic trainer must:
